Another ETS on-line mapping tool

1 December 2010

In its latest Sustainable Forestry Bulletin, MAF has launched an on-line mapping tool for forest owners when making allocation applications for pre-1990 forests. The tool is based on the version available for exemptions and post-1989 applications.

To start using the mapping tool, land owners need to access the Government Logon Service. A tutorial on using the mapping tools will be available soon on the MAF website. MAF has now allocated more than 5.1 million NZUs to 585 post-1989 forest owners. Over 125 000 hectares are now in the scheme. Those considering registering in the ETS to claim NZUs for 2008–2010 and who have not yet done so, should get their application in to MAF now.

For pre-1990 forest land owners, MAF has made final determinations on 39 applications, allocating just under 750 000 NZUs for both commitment periods. This represents about 13 500 hectares of pre-1990 forest. A preliminary determination has been made for a further 84 applications (38 000 hectares).

The Bulletin also brings forest owners up-to-date on the management of forest ETS  matters, including:

  • The timing of MAF's Christmas shut-down
  • Consultation on Field Measurement for post-1989 forests
  • Canterbury Field Measurement Workshop

During the Christmas break on-line transactions including  on-line mapping tools will be unavailable between 24 December 2010 and 5 January 2011, as MAF offices are closed during this period. No support will be available to users.

The period for making submissions on proposals for a Field Measurement Approach (FMA) to determine carbon stocks in post-1989 forest land closed on 15 November. Feedback is being considered and the final proposals will reported back to the government. The consultation document will remain on the MAF website. The FMA is expected to be in place from mid-2011.

MAF and the University of Canterbury are holding a three-day workshop on carbon forestry financial modelling, now underway in Rotorua. For more information, contact Dr Bruce Manley This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
