Matariki Forests has its Kohitere Forest, east of Levin, up for sale. The 478 ha block – 373 ha of which are planted – is one of the Horowhenua's most popular tramping and mountain biking spots.
LJ Hooker real estate agent Warwick Searle told the Horowhenua Mail it was likely that a future owner would allow continued public access, but there were no guarantees. He said Matariki was selling the forest because it was remote from the company's other plantations.
The property has a capital value of $2.3 million, excluding the value of the trees which vary in age and are due for harvest in 10-15 years. Tenders close on 15 June.
