Training and Careers Committee

The FOA Health Safety & Training Committee has been discontinued. Responsibilities, where appropriate, have been reallocated to other FOA/FFA Committees or the FOA Secretariat. In addition, the Forest Industry Safety Council (FISC) was established in response to the Independent Forestry Safety Review (IFSR). The council is an exciting prospect; the first true tri-partite industry lead body in New Zealand with the mandate to work in collaboration across the full plantation forestry sector, representing one voice in health and safety.  There have been many positive initiatives conducted within the industry and part of FISC’s work will be to gather, evaluate and share these initiatives more broadly across the sector. The council is funded jointly by the forest industry and the Government.

A new committee, Training & Careers has been established.

Purpose:

  • Consult on and develop a co-ordinated view on plantation forestry standards, qualifications and training needs and work with FISC, FICA and Competenz (the industry’s ITO) as well as funders and training providers to ensure standards and training solutions are delivering on those needs
  • Promote forestry careers, both directly and by working with and through other agencies

Issues:

  • National Standards for forestry, tertiary forestry training framework, training delivery, recruitment into the industry.

Composition:

  • Forest owners (FOA and FFA), contractors, Competenz, training providers with an interest in forestry.

Safety initiatives are on the Safetree website.
